1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-029

Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1949-D 1 cent WRPM-029, this Denver Lincoln wheat cent carries a D/D West repunched mintmark documented across two die stages submitted by Lloyd Hanson for Stage A and Gary Shaffstall for Stage B. Obverse Stage A shows a die chip at the left inside of the 4 in the date and die scratches at the eye pocket. By Obverse Stage B, a small die chip dot appears SSE below the last T in TRUST. Reverse Stage A presents two die chips appearing as dots in the field slightly below left center of the T in CENT. Stage B retains these chips and adds a north-south die scratch centered inside the bottom of B in PLURIBUS. Additional markers include a long die gouge under and to the right of VDB on the obverse and a small die chip above the dot between E and P of E PLURIBUS on the reverse. The westward D displacement places the secondary mintmark image to the left of the final position. The die chip inside the 4 on Obverse Stage A provides one of the more unusual marker locations, as chips within date digits are less commonly documented than those in legend letters or field areas.
