Description

D/D Tilted (Rotated)Die Markers: Obverse: Two sets of N/S and E/W die scratches in the form of a checker board between the L and I of LIBERTY. E/W die crack runs above VDB. Reverse: Die gouge to the left edge of the upper right wheat stalk.Submitted By: Scott RuschCross References: None known Obverse Stage A:. Cataloged as Wexler WRPM-019 and submitted by Scott Rusch, this 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent features a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mint mark similar in type to other rotated RPMs in the Wheat Cent series. The most distinctive die marker is a checkerboard pattern of north-south and east-west die scratches positioned between the L and I of LIBERTY, an unusual formation that provides an immediately recognizable identification point. Additional markers include an east-west die crack above the VDB designer's initials on the obverse. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the left of the upper right wheat stalk. Checkerboard die scratch patterns, where perpendicular sets of scratches intersect to create a grid-like texture, are relatively uncommon and suggest the die surface underwent polishing or abrasion from multiple directions during its preparation or maintenance. The tilted repunching of the D mint mark, combined with the distinctive checkerboard scratches near LIBERTY and the crack above VDB, creates a three-point diagnostic that makes WRPM-019 one of the more readily identifiable repunched mint mark varieties for the 1949-D date in the Lincoln Wheat Cent series.
