1949-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Medium spread visible on HALF DOLLAR with lighter doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA identifies the primary doubled die reverse for the 1949 Denver Mint Franklin Half Dollar, the second year of this series designed by John R. Sinnock. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-019 and DMR-002, this variety progresses through documented die stages: Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at Mid Die State, and Stage C reaches Late Die State (also unconfirmed). The Franklin Half Dollar series (1948-1963) replaced the Walking Liberty design and featured Benjamin Franklin's portrait — the first non-president to appear on a regular-issue U.S. coin since the Standing Liberty quarter. Denver struck 4,120,600 half dollars in 1949, a modest mintage that makes die varieties from this date somewhat scarcer in the marketplace than those from higher-production years. The medium spread on HALF DOLLAR indicates a substantial hubbing offset during die preparation, strong enough to be visible without magnification in favorable lighting. As DDR-001, this is the primary and typically strongest doubled die reverse known for the 1949-D Franklin.
