Description

An unusual doubled die reverse, the 1949-D Jefferson nickel DDR-001 displays strong spread manifesting as an extra lower right step corner on the Monticello building on the reverse. Unlike most doubled die reverses in the Jefferson series that show doubling on the legend text, this variety produces a visible architectural anomaly on the building itself — an additional step corner created by the secondary hub impression offsetting the building's stairway detail. Strong-class designation makes this one of the more dramatic doubled dies for the date. Denver struck approximately 36.5 million nickels in 1949. The VarietyVista catalog assigns UVC-1655 and die marriage DMR-007 to this die pair. The step area of Monticello has always been a focal point for Jefferson nickel collectors — full step designations command premium prices — and a doubled die that alters the step geometry represents a particularly interesting intersection of die variety and strike quality studies.
