Description

San Francisco's early production of Roosevelt Dimes yielded a significant number of repunched mint mark varieties, and WRPM-020 marks the twentieth cataloged RPM on the 1948-S issue — a notable density for a silver dime. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 10c WRPM-020, this variety documents a working die on which the S mint mark was applied at least twice with detectable positional displacement. The 1948-S Roosevelt Dime was struck on 90% silver planchets at a facility that typically produced lower mintages than Denver, making S-mint dimes of this era somewhat scarcer. Twenty documented RPMs on a dime date is exceptional — cents, with their far higher mintage and correspondingly greater number of working dies, typically dominate RPM catalogs, so achieving this count on a silver dime speaks to the thoroughness of research applied to early Roosevelt issues. The hand-punching process for the S mint mark at San Francisco followed the same methodology used at Denver, with a small steel letter punch manually applied to each working die before it entered service. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are currently published for this variety.
