Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1948-S 10c WRPM-017 and submitted by David Mulberry, this 1948-S Roosevelt dime displays an S/S repunched mintmark shifted to the west. Obverse die markers include an ESE/WNW die crack at the upper right of the head, a die crack extending west from the rim at 1 o'clock into the head, and short N/S die scratches on the upper center of the nose. Reverse markers include a NW/SE die crack through the left side of the N in ONE, a long die gouge SSE from the bottom of the L in PLURIBUS, die scratches north from the upper right olive leaves, scratches NNW from the upper left olive leaves, and N/S die scratches to the left of and through the lower olive. No other cross-references are known. The 1948-S Roosevelt dime was produced during the early years of the series, when hand-punched mintmarks remained standard, and the extensive network of die cracks and scratches across both sides suggests this die pair saw considerable use before retirement.
