1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Displaying an S/S Southeast displacement, this seventh documented repunched mint mark for the 1948-S Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint during the early years of the Roosevelt Dime series. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-182 and DMR-008, four die stages provide an unusually detailed progression record for this variety. Stage A at early die state and Stage B at mid-die-state are both unconfirmed, awaiting documented specimens. Stage C shows both the reverse and obverse reaching late die state. Stage D advances to very late die state with a die crack from the right stem to the rim through the M of DIME and a light die crack developing in the hair at the back of the head. Four documented stages rather than the typical three indicates an extended die life that produced coins across a wide range of die deterioration. Roosevelt Dime RPMs from 1948 represent the era of hand-punched mint marks, when each working die received its mint letter individually, creating the conditions for repunched impressions that variety collectors value today.
