1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-179, DMR-005, this 1948 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits a repunched mintmark with evidence of the original S punch position visible near the final placement. Three die stages track the progression of this die pair: Stage A captures the early die state, Stage B the mid-die state, and Stage C the late die state. Each successive stage may show increasing die wear that progressively obscures the repunching evidence, making earlier die states more desirable for clear attribution. Roosevelt Dimes struck at San Francisco before 1955 are composed of 90% silver (0.900 fine) and carry the S mintmark on the reverse, applied by hand to each working die. RPM-004 is one of several repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for the 1948-S issue, reflecting the frequency with which hand-punching produced positional errors at the San Francisco facility during this period. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime obverse, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his association with the March of Dimes.
