1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Bearing the uncommon distinction of a triple-punched mint mark — S/S/S West, West — this 1948-S Roosevelt Dime shows three overlapping impressions where the S punch was applied, repositioned westward and struck again, then shifted further west for a third impression. Triple-punched mintmarks are decidedly scarcer than standard repunchings, as three separate impressions had to misalign during die preparation. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint, this coin belongs to the second year of John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design, introduced in 1946. Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-177 and DMR-003, the variety has been observed across three die states: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both sides showing late-mid-die-state characteristics, and Stage C with both sides in late die state. Triple-punched mintmarks from the 1940s reflect the hand-punching process at branch mints, where each working die received its mintmark individually — creating multiple opportunities for the overlapping letter forms collectors prize.
