1948-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-041

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1948-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-041 is distinguished by an unusually rich set of die-scratch markers covering both obverse and reverse surfaces. On the obverse, die gouges run NNW-SSE and N-S to the left of the date. Additional scratches run along the beard and jaw line, across the shoulder and coat, and a scratch runs west through the W of WE in IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch runs N-S from the U in UNITED upward to the O in ONE. Additional scratches run NNW from the O in ONE, and a scratch runs NNW-SSE from the T in CENT to the E in ONE — a long diagonal crossing the lower reverse. North-south scratches also appear through both the M and the C of AMERICA. This extensive scratch pattern, distributed across the obverse portrait and the reverse motto and field, reflects the die polishing and reconditioning history of this working die during its service life. The density of documented markers makes WRPM-041 among the more fully characterized varieties in the 1948-S Lincoln Cent attribution record.
