1948-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-033
Error
Description
Submitted by Brian Ribar, the 1948-S WRPM-033 Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an S/S West repunched mintmark with the secondary impression displaced westward. Obverse markers include light N/S die scratches in the fields, heavier scratches south from the beard, a die scratch between the lower WE TRUST, and a scratch through the lower left leg of R in LIBERTY. The reverse presents a heavily abraded late die state surface with no prominent markers — consistent with extended use that wore away secondary diagnostics. The heavy reverse abrasion contrasts with the detailed obverse markers, suggesting the reverse die may have been in service longer. Attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 1-cent WRPM-033. Thirty-three RPM varieties for the 1948-S cent reflects the enormous San Francisco production and the variability of hand-punching. The beard area scratches provide an effective attribution point given their concentration in an easily located zone.
