Description

Showing an S/S/S West, Serif triple-punched mintmark, this VarietyVista-cataloged 1948-S Lincoln Wheat Cent documents a reverse die change mid-service. Die markers span two die pairs: UVC-311 / DMR-010 covering Stages A-B and UVC-312 / DMR-011 covering Stage C. Stage A with a die gouge at the lower back of the bust at EMDS and reverse at EMDS; Stage B with obverse at MDS and a light die crack from the upper left wheat to the rim at MDS; Stage C with a die clash at the throat at LDS and a fresh reverse die at MDS. The mid-production reverse die swap is evidenced by the shift from DMR-010 to DMR-011, indicating the original reverse failed while the obverse RPM die continued. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm at the San Francisco Mint.
