1948 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Strong spread across all rim lettering, flame tips, stems, leaves, and branches makes this primary doubled die reverse for the 1948 Roosevelt Silver Dime one of the most comprehensive DDRs in the early Roosevelt series. The spread appearing as notches on the lettering — a characteristic pattern where the doubled image creates a stepped or notched profile on individual letter strokes — is particularly diagnostic. Cross-referenced as FS-101 (and noted as FS-801 in the Fivaz-Stanton numbering), this variety carries major reference recognition. VarietyVista cataloged it under UVC-172 and DMR-002 with three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State is unconfirmed, Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in Mid-Die State, and Stage C reaches Late Die State though also unconfirmed. The 1948 date is historically significant as the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, which replaced the Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) design in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. As the first-year-of-issue DDR-001, this variety occupies a premium position among Roosevelt Dime doubled dies. Specimens showing the full range of the strong spread across the torch, olive branch, and lettering command particular attention from series specialists.
