Progressive left-to-right spread distinguishes DDR-001 of the 1948 Jefferson Nickel, where the doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA increases in intensity from the left side of each inscription toward the right. This progressive pattern is characteristic of a pivot-point doubling mechanism, where the hub and die were slightly misaligned around a fixed rotational point during hubbing — elements near the pivot show minimal spread while those farther away display increasingly visible separation. Philadelphia struck 89.3 million nickels in 1948, the first full post-war year of nickel production after the 1946 return to standard cupro-nickel composition. As DDR-001, this is the primary documented doubled die reverse for the date, the first recognized and typically the most significant. The doubling is classified as very light, requiring careful magnification and proper lighting to distinguish the secondary image from normal die flow or strike characteristics. Die markers UVC-841 and DMR-002 serve as secondary identification points. Very light progressive doubling can be challenging to attribute definitively because the separation between primary and secondary images is narrow, but the consistent left-to-right increase across two separate inscriptions confirms a genuine hub doubling event rather than mechanical doubling or die deterioration.
