Description

Second RPM variety catalogued by VarietyVista for the 1947 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, designated RPM-002 and distinguished from the companion RPM-001 by its different die markers and die stage sequence. Die marker codes UVC-358 and DMR-003 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS) and is confirmed by two concurrent markers: die scratches in both archways of Monticello, and die scratches through the Y of LIBERTY. These Stage A markers provide an unusual case where the earliest documented die state is the most positively identified, as both diagnostics are specific to this variety. Stage B is middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed). Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage A die scratches in both archways distinguish this variety from RPM-001, which shows scratches only in the far right archway. On the 1947-S Jefferson Nickel, the relative scarcity of San Francisco production makes RPM varieties from this date of above-average interest. Collectors should confirm the archway die scratch pattern and the Y scratch before recording attribution, as Stage A coins are the most diagnostic examples available. Attribution: VarietyVista; UVC-358, DMR-003.
