1947-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
Leading RPM variety on the 1947 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-001. With the conclusion of wartime silver nickel production in 1945, the 1947 series returned to the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy and the smaller mintmark position at the right of the building on the Monticello reverse. Hand-punched mintmarks on postwar Jefferson Nickels are proportionally smaller than the wartime oversized format, but repunching remained a regular occurrence. Die marker codes UVC-357 and DMR-002 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is confirmed as middle die state (MDS) and is identified by two markers: die scratches running N/S in the far right archway of Monticello, and an obverse in MDS. Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state (LDS). The progression from Stage B to Stage C on this variety involves the die scratches in the far right archway becoming increasingly worn, providing a visible indication of die advancement. The 1947-S Jefferson Nickel is a scarce San Francisco issue, adding numismatic context to this RPM variety. Attribution: VarietyVista; UVC-357, DMR-002.
