1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Carrying the Wexler designation 1947 10c WDDR-002, this Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits very close clockwise spread on DIME, pivoting from approximately the 11 o'clock position. The clockwise rotational component — where the secondary hub impression is displaced in a clockwise arc relative to the primary — produces asymmetric doubling that intensifies with distance from the pivot point. The 1947 Roosevelt Dime belongs to the inaugural generation of the series, which debuted in 1946 following the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and doubled dies from these earliest years document the Mint's initial die preparation processes for the new design. Obverse die markers include a long north-south scratch behind the head and scratches between the nose and the T of LIBERTY. Reverse markers comprise scratches inside the D of DIME and a scratch extending east from both the C and the second A of AMERICA. These die scratches serve as fingerprints unique to this die, enabling attributors to confirm WDDR-002 even when the very close doubling on DIME might be difficult to distinguish from die wear. The 1947 dime was struck in 90% silver.
