1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-034

Description

Numbered WRPM-034, this 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent belongs to an extensive series of repunched mintmarks for the date — the high sequence number reflecting how many D/D varieties have been documented from Denver's postwar production. This variety shows D/D Tilted (Rotated) orientation, meaning the second punch landed at a slight angle relative to the first. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at Denver during the immediate postwar period when cent production surged. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the obverse shows die scratches northeast above 1 in the date and light concentric die scratches in the upper hair and forehead. The reverse provides extensive diagnostics: two die gouges in the upper opening of N in ONE, a die gouge right of T in CENT, another near the wheat ear northeast of the second S in STATES, two die gouges on the lower right of F in OF, and a linear die gouge under the right wheat stem. This density of reverse markers makes the die readily distinguishable from the other 33+ documented RPMs for the date.
