1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-032

Description

Thirty-two cataloged repunched mintmarks for the 1947 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent underscore how frequently mintmark repositioning occurred during the manual punch era, and WRPM-032 shows a D/D tilted (rotated) alignment where the initial and corrective punches created a distinctive overlapping image. Before 1990, a skilled Mint engraver physically hammered each D mintmark into individual working dies, and any misalignment in angle or position prompted a second corrective punch that left permanent traces of the first attempt. Detailed die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, two die chips appear on the lower jaw, and a die scratch runs southwest from the lower back area. The reverse carries a short die scratch at the bottom right of the lower leg of the E in ONE, a northeast-to-southwest die scratch at the left side of the upper T of CENT, and a die gouge in the field below and to the left of the right wheat stem. These markers persist across all coins struck from this die, providing reliable identification.
