Description

Listed by the Wexler Team as 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-026, this Lincoln Wheat Cent features a D/D repunched mintmark that is tilted or rotated, with an extensive array of die markers across both faces. Obverse markers include a die scratch running north-south between the 1 and 9 of the date, north-south die scratches above the 47 of the date, V-shaped die scratches between the S and T of TRUST, and a die chip in the space between the lower lip and the top of Lincoln's chin. Reverse markers include a long southwest-northeast die scratch above the N of ONE and a long die gouge running south from the lower left edge of the left wheat stalk to the end of the left wheat stem. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are known. The die chip between Lincoln's lower lip and chin is a particularly distinctive marker because its location in a high-detail facial feature area makes it memorable and quickly locatable once the collector knows where to look. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1947 in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter — an early postwar year when Denver Mint production normalized after wartime adjustments. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait pairs with the wheat ears reverse. The 26th cataloged RPM for the 1947-D date reflects the substantial die population Denver maintained for cent production, and the extensive die marker constellation — with four distinct obverse markers and two reverse markers — provides a robust attribution framework where even partial confirmation of multiple markers builds strong identification confidence.
