1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-025
Error
Description
Tilted and rotated, the D/D repunched mintmark on WRPM-025 records a Denver mintmark that was punched into the working die, then struck again at a different angle — a manufacturing artifact from the era when individual mintmarks were hand-applied to each working die using a separate punch. Obverse die markers are extensive: NW/SE die scratches appear above and below the eyelid, and a SW/NE die scratch sits above the D of GOD. Reverse markers are equally detailed, with a SW/NE die scratch running inside and continuing through the O in ONE ending at the B of PLURIBUS, NNE die scratches inside the E in CENT, and an arcing die scratch to the right of the last A in AMERICA. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-025 with no other known cross-references, this is the twenty-fifth repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent. Denver struck 194,750,000 cents in 1947, a robust post-war mintage. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the tilted rotation mechanism is distinct from simple directional repunching because the entire mintmark letter rotates between punching applications, creating overlap patterns that differ from north/south or east/west shifts. The extensive die scratch network across both sides provides multiple confirmation points for attribution.
