1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

Twenty-third in the Wexler Team's catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-023 exhibits a D/D tilted (rotated) configuration — the secondary D mintmark was punched at a rotated angle relative to the primary, creating an overlap where the two D images diverge along a curved axis rather than a simple linear offset. This rotational component distinguishes WRPM-023 from straight-shift RPMs and requires careful comparison of the D's serifs and curves. An unusually rich constellation of die markers supports attribution across both sides: on the obverse, a die gouge appears right of the D of GOD, die scratches populate the upper ear area, and a die gouge sits right of Lincoln's bow tie. The reverse carries die scratches on CENT and STATES. This abundance — five distinct markers across two surfaces — makes WRPM-023 one of the more confidently attributable RPMs for the date, as die markers alone can confirm the working die independent of the repunching. Collectors examining 1947-D cents should look for the rotational tilt in the mintmark area as the primary diagnostic.
