1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-017

Description

Listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-017, this Lincoln Wheat cent presents a D/D Tilted (Rotated) mint mark repunching in which the secondary D impression is rotated relative to the primary. Obverse die markers include die gouges on the tops of the E of WE and the TR of TRUST. A die scratch runs north from the top of the 1 in the date; the same scratch continues south from the bottom edge of the 1, ending at the bust. A further die scratch runs south from the bottom of the 4, ending in the field below the date. Reverse die markers include die scratches running south between the T and E of STATES, continuing south along the right side of the last A of AMERICA and ending at the right wheat stalk stem. The 1947-D Lincoln Wheat cent was struck in bronze at the Denver Mint. The overlapping die scratch sequences documented on both obverse and reverse provide a reliable means of confirming attribution even when the mint mark repunching itself is partially obscured by contact marks or light wear. The Wexler WRPM-017 designation places this in the established taxonomy of Lincoln cent repunched mint marks.
