1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-010

Description

The Wexler Team cataloged WRPM-010 of the 1947-D Lincoln wheat cent as a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark, where the secondary mintmark impression appears at a slight rotational angle relative to the final punch. A medium die chip in the form of a dot on the lower area of the beard serves as the primary obverse die marker. The reverse presents multiple attribution aids: a short diagonal die scratch at the bottom center bar and vertical leg of the E in CENT, south-southwest die scratches from the center and left leg of the N in CENT, and a die chip at the bottom right edge that develops into a light die crack running southeast to the top of the first T of STATES. This progressive die chip-to-crack feature helps establish die state sequencing. The Denver Mint struck over 194 million Lincoln cents in 1947, and tilted repunched mintmark varieties reflect the challenges of hand-punching mintmarks into individual working dies.
