Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-008, this repunched mintmark variety was struck on a 1947-D Lincoln Wheat cent at the Denver Mint. The Lincoln Wheat cent, designed by Victor David Brenner with the wheat ears reverse introduced in 1909, was composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter and a plain edge. Denver struck 194,750,000 cents in 1947, a healthy post-war production figure that reflected the growing demand for circulating coinage as the American economy transitioned from wartime to peacetime production. The repunched mintmark on WRPM-008 is classified as D/D Tilted (Rotated), meaning the mintmark punch was applied to the working die at least twice, with one impression rotated relative to the other. This rotational displacement distinguishes it from simpler north, south, east, or west repunchings where the second impression is merely shifted directionally from the first. Tilted repunched mintmarks require the die setter to have rotated the punch tool between impressions, creating overlapping D images at slightly different angles visible under magnification. Obverse die markers essential for attribution include a die gouge resembling a dot positioned north of the right fork of the Y in LIBERTY and east of the lower hair detail of Lincoln's portrait. No additional cross-references to CONECA or other attribution services have been established for this variety. Repunched mintmark varieties on Lincoln Wheat cents from the 1940s are among the most actively collected error types, as the hand-punched mintmark application process used during this era made repunchings a regular occurrence across all mint facilities. The 1947-D WRPM-008 adds to the substantial census of Denver Mint repunched mintmark varieties from the post-war Wheat cent production period.
