Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-288 and DMR-008, this 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with the secondary impressions shifted north, with additional diagnostic evidence visible at the serif details of the D letterform. The triple repunch indicates the mintmark punch required two corrective applications after the initial placement — an unusually high number of corrections that created a complex layered impression with three distinct D images partially overlapping in a northward progression. Three documented die stages track the variety through its full production life: Stage A places both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B advances both sides to mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C documents both in late die state (LDS). This complete three-stage coverage from EDS through LDS provides collectors with a comprehensive reference for evaluating the condition and die state of potential specimens. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln, struck at the Denver Mint in 1947 in standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1947-D had a mintage of approximately 194 million pieces.
