1947-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a repunched D mintmark applied twice at differing angles during die preparation. Die markers UVC-284 / DMR-004 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS, light die scratches east-west on upper obverse, and a light die gouge between upper UN of UNUM at MDS; Stage C with obverse die scratches worn away at LDS and die scratches east-west on lower reverse at LDS; Stage D with a weak secondary mintmark at VLDS, a die crack on forehead, a die crack on the 9 of date, and reverse at VLDS. The systematic weakening from medium to weak to VLDS documents progressive die wear flattening the displaced D. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm during the post-war production surge.
