1946-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Attributed as RPM-005 (UVC-516, DMR-011), this 1946 San Francisco Jefferson nickel carries a sans serif S mintmark (MMS-004) repunched west (S/S West). Three die stages track the die's service life. Stage A finds both reverse and obverse in early die state with no supplementary markers. By Stage B, north-to-south die scratches have developed on both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state. Stage C reaches late die state but remains unconfirmed. The sans serif mintmark style, lacking the small terminal flourishes found on serif punches, is a recognized punch variant from the mid-1940s San Francisco Mint that helps narrow the attribution to a specific mintmark punch. Jefferson nickels from 1946 marked the return to the standard copper-nickel alloy after four years of wartime silver composition. Repunched mintmarks from this date reflect the continued hand-punching of each working die. Collectors should examine the S mintmark behind Monticello for westward displacement of a secondary impression, then check for Stage B scratches running north-to-south across both surfaces to establish die progression.
