1946-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Light spread on DIME, UNUM, the dot, the right stem, and RICA of AMERICA marks DDR-004 on the inaugural Denver Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and first struck in 1946 to honor Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945. Die markers tracked under UVC-046 and DMR-010 reveal an unusually detailed four-stage die life: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a strong die gouge through the upper N of UNITED at Early-to-Mid Die State with the obverse paired as DDO-008 at Mid Die State, Stage C with both reverse and obverse reaching Late Die State, and Stage D arriving at Very Late Die State. The DDO-008 pairing noted at Stage B means this die marriage combines both obverse and reverse doubling, creating a dual-interest variety. The obverse is additionally classified as ODV-001. Denver struck 61,043,500 Roosevelt Dimes in 1946, the series' first year, when public demand for the new design honoring the recently deceased president drove strong initial production.
