1946-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Premier doubled die reverse for the inaugural Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime, DDR-001 presents extremely strong shifting Southwest on central design elements combined with extremely strong extra thickness across all outer rim lettering and design elements — making this one of the most dramatic doubled die reverses in the early Roosevelt Dime series. VarietyVista catalogs it as UVC-048 with DMR-012, and the "extremely strong" descriptor (used twice in the original documentation) signals a variety that may be visible to the unaided eye on well-preserved specimens. The Southwest directional shift on the central torch and branch design combined with heavy thickening on the peripheral legends indicates a substantial hub displacement between impressions. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, while Stage B at Mid-Die State and Stage C at Late Die State remain unconfirmed — suggesting that early die state specimens are the most commonly encountered, potentially because the die was removed from service before reaching advanced deterioration. The obverse die is identified as ODV-001, establishing the die marriage. The 1946-D Roosevelt Dime was produced at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition during the very first year of the Roosevelt design, which replaced the Mercury Dime following Franklin Roosevelt's death in 1945. John R. Sinnock's new design went through initial die preparation at a time when the production team was establishing procedures for the new type, and the strength of the doubling on DDR-001 may reflect early-production adjustments in hub-to-die alignment protocols. As the number-one DDR for the first Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety holds both attribution primacy and historical significance.
