Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this first-year post-WWII Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-004 features distinctive die gouges that serve as strong attribution markers. Die markers UVC-230 / DMR-006: Stage A with a circular die gouge under bust at EDS, die gouge in field between WE and TRUST, die scratch southeast from upper right T of LIBERTY, and die gouge north from inside lower right wheat grains at EDS; Stage B with obverse and reverse at EMDS; Stage C with a light die crack northeast across forehead at LMDS and die gouge to the west of the C of CENT at LMDS; Stage D with die scratch southeast from lower R of LIBERTY at LDS and die gouge from lower right wheat grains gone at LDS. The circular gouge under the bust is an unusual shape for die surface damage and creates a distinctive diagnostic feature. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1946-D was struck during the first full year of postwar cent production at Denver.
