1945-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 2 o'clock characterizes WDDR-003 on the 1945 San Francisco Washington Silver Quarter, affecting QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath details north of QUARTER. The pivoted rotation mechanism means doubling increases with distance from the 2 o'clock anchor point, with the most visible displacement appearing on the lettering and wreath elements furthest from the pivot axis. Obverse die markers include two die scratches running NNW from the bottom left of the R in LIBERTY, providing a secondary attribution diagnostic. The reverse holds particular interest: it also carries an Inverted Trumpet Tail S mintmark, adding a repunched mintmark feature to the doubled die variety and creating a combined DDR/RPM die. A small die gouge to the left of the upper second T in STATES completes the reverse attribution markers. San Francisco struck 17,004,001 Washington Quarters in 1945, a wartime mintage that was significantly lower than Philadelphia's output for the same year. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1945-S 25c WDDR-003 with no additional known cross-references, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. The Inverted Trumpet Tail S mintmark notation describes a specific mintmark punch orientation where the tail of the S flares outward in a trumpet shape, rotated from its intended position — a hand-punching anomaly that complements the hub-doubling error.
