1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-017
Error
Description
Cataloged as RPM-017 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-219 and die marriage record DMR-020, this 1945-S Lincoln wheat cent shows an S/S mintmark repunched to the south, cross-referenced as MMS-004 with the descriptive designation Trumpet Tail. The trumpet tail feature refers to the distinctive shape created when the secondary S impression extends below the primary punch, producing an elongated lower curve. Three die stages document the progression. In Stage A at early die state, die scratches run north-south across the obverse, and a diagonal die gouge appears between IN and GOD, while the reverse is also in early die state. By Stage B, both obverse and reverse have reached mid-die state. Stage C finds both sides in late die state. The trumpet tail characteristic is one of the more visually appealing repunched mintmark presentations on Lincoln wheat cents, and the southward displacement is best observed under moderate magnification by examining the lower serifs of the S mintmark where the secondary impression trails downward.
