1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
RPM-003 on the 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S displaced to the West (S/S West), with the Trumpet Tail mintmark style (MMS-004), attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers are UVC-204 and DMR-005. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). The Trumpet Tail designation refers to the distinctive flared lower serif of the S punch used at San Francisco during this period — a stylistic detail catalogued as MMS-004 in the VarietyVista mintmark style reference. The S/S West offset on RPM-003 displaces the secondary impression to the left of the primary mintmark strike. The 1945-S Wheat Cent is a mid-production wartime issue struck in standard bronze composition after the steel-cent experiment of 1943. Die markers UVC-204 and DMR-005 provide a reliable two-sided fingerprint for this die pair. Trumpet Tail RPM varieties are sought by collectors who specialize in mintmark punch styles as well as those assembling RPM variety sets for the 1945-S cent.
