1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-021
Error
Description
RPM-021 on the 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S displaced to the South (S/S South), with the Trumpet Tail mintmark style (MMS-004), attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers are UVC-223 and DMR-024. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). The Trumpet Tail designation (MMS-004) refers to the distinctive flared lower terminal of the S punch used at San Francisco during this period, catalogued as a separate mintmark style from the later Sans Serif punches. The S/S South offset displaces the secondary impression below the dominant strike — a southward repunching that is directionally distinct from the many West-shifted varieties catalogued for 1945-S cents. The 1945-S Wheat Cent is a late-war issue struck in standard 95% copper composition, produced in the final months of World War II. Die markers UVC-223 and DMR-024 furnish the two-sided confirmation needed to distinguish RPM-021 from other VarietyVista-catalogued 1945-S Trumpet Tail RPM varieties. Mintmark-style collectors pursing Trumpet Tail attributions find the 1945-S a prolific date for this punch type.
