Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0564 and DMR-021, this 1945-D Washington Silver Quarter DDR-005 displays light spread and extra thickness on STATES OF, AM of AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the eagle's head — a broad reverse doubling pattern affecting both inscription elements and a major design device. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B at mid-die-state where the reverse is MDS and the obverse develops a die crack across the bust into the upper 1 of the date and a light die crack in the hair; and Stage C at late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The Stage B obverse die cracks are particularly useful for attribution because the crack running across the bust into the upper 1 of the date creates a distinctive path that is unlikely to be replicated on any other die, making it a strong fingerprint for identifying specimens from this specific die marriage. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter with the heraldic eagle reverse that served from 1932 through 1998. The 1945-D was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm during the final months of World War II. The partial-word doubling pattern — STATES OF rather than the complete UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and AM rather than the full AMERICA — reveals the specific geometry of the hub displacement vector, which produced visible doubling on letter groups positioned at particular angles and distances from the displacement axis while leaving adjacent letters in the same inscriptions unaffected, a common manifestation of hub doubling where the displacement magnitude varies across the die face.
