Description

Struck at the Denver Mint during the final year of World War II, this 1945-D Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a repunched mint mark cataloged as RPM-008 by VarietyVista. Repunched mint marks on wartime cents arose because each working die received its mint mark by hand using a separate punch, and slight misalignment between impressions left traces of the earlier strike visible beneath or beside the final position. The variety is assigned UVC-195 and DMR-010 within the VarietyVista attribution system. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the obverse at mid-die state with the reverse progressing to late die state, and Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. The 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent was composed of the standard bronze alloy — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — having reverted from the zinc-coated steel composition used exclusively in 1943 and the recycled shell-case brass of 1944. Victor David Brenner's iconic obverse design, introduced in 1909, continued through 1958 as the longest-running portrait cent of its era.
