1945-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this wartime Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent shows progressive die crack development across three stages. Die markers UVC-189 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack across the shoulder at MDS and reverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from head to rim through the right leg of the W of WE at LDS, a die crack across shoulder to lapel, and reverse at LDS. The Stage C shoulder-to-lapel crack extending beyond the Stage B shoulder crack documents how die fractures propagate through continued striking pressure. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1945-D was produced during the final year of WWII as Denver Mint production continued at elevated wartime levels with Brenner's wheat ears reverse in its thirty-sixth year of service.
