1944-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-012
ErrorDescription
Twelfth repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1944 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-012 belongs to the wartime silver composition series struck from 1942 through 1945. During these years, nickels were minted from a 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese alloy to conserve nickel for military applications, and the large P, D, or S mintmark was placed prominently above Monticello's dome to distinguish these emergency-composition coins. Detailed die markers aid attribution on both sides of the coin: the obverse displays N/S die scratches about the 194 of the date, an N/S die scratch inside the 9, and die scratches running north from the tops of ER in LIBERTY. The reverse carries an N/S die scratch inside the U of UNITED, an N/S die scratch at the upper N of UNITED, and two die scratches on the left edge of the left wheat stalk. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1944-S 1¢ WRPM-012, the twelve RPMs documented for this date reflect both the high production volume at San Francisco and the manual mintmark application process that prevailed before hubbed mintmarks were standardized in the 1990s.
