1944-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
Struck at the San Francisco Mint in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, this 1944-S Jefferson Nickel carries an S/S West repunched mintmark documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-189 / DMR-002 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with light die scratches over all the reverse at MDS, a die break over E of LIBERTY at VLDS, a die crack from top of head southwest to front of hair, and a die crack from top of head southeast then south through hair; Stage C with die scratches worn away at LDS and obverse at VLDS. The progression from MDS scratches to their erasure at LDS documents how continued striking polished away surface damage while structural cracks simultaneously worsened. Weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm, this wartime nickel features the oversized S above Monticello's dome.
