1944 Atypical Die Clash ADC-10C-1944-02
Error
Description
Designated ADC-10c-1944-02, this atypical die clash appears on a 1944 Winged Liberty (Mercury) dime and represents one of two documented clash events for that date. The coin resides in the collection of Jeffery Schmittler. Unlike a standard die clash where obverse and reverse dies meet without a planchet in the expected alignment, atypical clashes occur when the dies come together at an unusual angle or position, leaving design transfer marks in unexpected areas. This particular clash is strong in intensity, comparable to ADC-10c-1944-01, but the clash marks appear in slightly different locations across both sides of the coin. That positional distinction confirms this as a separate die-clash event rather than a later stage of the first. Mercury dimes from the mid-1940s were produced in enormous quantities to support wartime commerce, making atypical clashes from high-speed production runs an intriguing byproduct of the era's minting pressures. Collectors can differentiate the two 1944 events by carefully mapping where the transferred design elements fall relative to the primary devices.
