Description

Light spread and extra thickness manifest on UNUM and AMERICA, identifying this wartime Jefferson nickel as DDR-006, a doubled die reverse variety struck during the silver alloy composition years of 1942-1945. VarietyVista assigned this die pair UVC-772 with die markers reference DMR-044, documenting progression through three distinct stages. Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state. At Stage B, the reverse reaches mid-die-state and a die clash becomes visible through the ribbon knot on the reverse, a common occurrence on Jefferson nickels where the obverse portrait and reverse building create predictable clash interference patterns. Stage C has not been confirmed at late die state. The 1944 Jefferson nickel was struck in the wartime 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese composition, identifiable by the large mintmark placed above the dome of Monticello. This alloy substitution freed nickel metal for military applications, and the resulting coins have a distinctive appearance compared to their pre-war and post-war counterparts. Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse design provides numerous fine architectural lines where doubled die spread can be detected, particularly in the building's columns, windows, and the inscription MONTICELLO below.
