1944-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with die marker references UVC-0429 and DMR-010, this 1944-D Washington quarter exhibits a light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR. Three die stages document the progressive deterioration of this reverse die. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state is identified by a distinctive die gouge that loops from the upper Q to the U of QUARTER, with the obverse also showing mid die state characteristics. By Stage C the die has entered late die state, developing a die crack across the ribbon extending to the rim through the QU of QUARTER, another die crack across the bust, and a light die crack across the forehead and hair. The looping gouge connecting Q to U in QUARTER serves as the most reliable attribution marker at mid die state, while the extensive cracking pattern in late die state makes Stage C specimens readily identifiable. Washington quarter doubled die reverses from the wartime era remain underappreciated compared to cent varieties from the same period.
