1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-017

Description

Struck at the Denver Mint in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, this 1944-D Jefferson Nickel carries a D/D West repunched mintmark documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-521 / DMR-020 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack from the lower right building to rim and another from the right dome to pillar #3 at MDS, obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from rim through the left leg of the first U of UNUM through the dome to pillar #3 at LMDS, obverse at LMDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The extensive Stage C die crack traversing from rim through lettering and across architectural elements documents major structural deterioration. At 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized D above Monticello distinguished wartime silver-content coins from standard copper-nickel issues.
