1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-015
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-461 and DMR-017, this 1944 Denver wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel displays a D/D repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the west. Three die states document the die's progression through service. The wartime silver alloy composition of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese was adopted to conserve nickel for military applications, and the large D mintmark placed above Monticello required careful hand positioning. The westward displacement of the initial D beneath the final position creates a visible secondary image to the left of the primary mintmark. Denver wartime nickels from 1944 saw substantial production, and the enlarged reverse mintmark format unique to the 1942-1945 silver composition period makes even modest repunching more visible than on the smaller mintmarks used in standard years. Among the fifteen RPM listings cataloged through this number for 1944-D, the variety contributes to a comprehensive record of mintmark positioning challenges that accompanied high-volume wartime coinage production.
