1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1944-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in the wartime silver alloy, carrying the oversized D above Monticello's dome. Die markers UVC-188 / DMR-016 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with numerous light die scratches on the reverse and the obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The numerous light reverse scratches at MDS indicate the die accumulated abrasion through its mid-life phase, likely from die maintenance or contact with foreign material during press operations. At 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1944-D was produced during the third year of emergency alloy production. Schlag's design was retained throughout the wartime period with the oversized D placed above the dome for public identification.
