1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-012
Error
Description
Twelfth in VarietyVista's catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1944-D Jefferson Nickel wartime silver alloy issue, RPM-012 documents a D/D West displacement — the second punch landing west of the initial impression. Cataloged under UVC-186 and DMR-014, four die stages trace the die's life: Stage A in early die state when the westward displacement is sharpest, Stage B at MDS, Stage C in LDS, and Stage D at VLDS near retirement. The 1944-D was struck in wartime silver alloy — 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese — adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military armor plating. The D mintmark on wartime nickels appears above Monticello in a large format, making repunched mintmarks on these issues somewhat easier to detect than the smaller mintmarks used in other series. Twelve documented RPMs for the 1944-D reflects the substantial variety potential created by wartime production pressures and the hand-punching technique applied to each working die.
