1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 is notable for documenting an obverse die change mid-production. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-562 / DMR-022 for Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed) and Stage B with reverse at MDS and a die crack from head to rim at K-11:20 at MDS; then UVC-178 / DMR-006 for Stage C with a die crack from right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 at LDS, a die crack from N of CENTS through O of OF, and obverse die changed at LDS. The obverse die change between Stages B and C confirms the original obverse wore out while the RPM reverse continued in service with a replacement. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized D above Monticello marks the Denver wartime silver alloy production.
