1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Leading the repunched mintmark census for the 1943-S Mercury dime, RPM-001 displays an S/S/S triple-punched mintmark with secondary impressions displaced to the west and southwest of the final position. During the hand-punching era, each working die received its mintmark individually: a Mint employee positioned a small steel letter punch bearing the S and struck it with a mallet, repeating or adjusting the process as needed to achieve proper depth and alignment. Three distinct impressions on this die — the primary S plus two displaced ghosts — indicate the engraver repositioned the punch at least twice, with the first attempt landing too far west and the second too far southwest before the final blow seated the letter in its intended position. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime reverse places the mintmark at the lower left near the fasces, the traditional bundle of rods and axe symbolizing civic authority. San Francisco struck approximately 60.40 million dimes in 1943, a substantial wartime production year when the Mint operated at elevated capacity to meet both military and civilian coinage needs. This variety carries the cross-reference FS-501, the Fivaz-Stanton designation from the Cherry Pickers' Guide that provides widespread collector recognition and establishes RPM-001 as a legitimate cherry-picking target — a variety worth searching for in dealer inventories at face value pricing. The west and southwest displacement directions place the secondary S impressions to the left and lower-left of the primary, creating a clustered triple-S pattern visible under 10-15x magnification. As RPM-001, this represents the most significant or earliest identified repunched mintmark for the 1943-S Mercury dime, and the FS-501 recognition ensures sustained collector demand.
