1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

An S/S West variety on the sole year of zinc-coated steel cent production, this VarietyVista-documented 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent developed extensive die cracking at Stage C across both faces. Die markers UVC-1059 / DMR-007: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with a die crack from shoulder to rim east of V.D.B. at LDS, a die crack across lower shoulder and lapel, a die crack from E of ONE northwest to second U of PLURIBUS at MDS, and a die crack in upper left wheat lines to rim. The four simultaneous die cracks at Stage C — spanning both obverse and reverse — document catastrophic structural failure approaching terminal die state. Weighing 2.70 grams at 19.05 mm diameter, the steel cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the wartime copper conservation period. The 1943 steel cents are the only magnetic U.S. cents ever produced.
